Job Description


As a Security Engineer, you will be responsible for product security reviews, building and deploying tools, as well as consulting on solutions related to securing the global public and private cloud infrastructure that runs our SaaS products. This position is responsible for all technical aspects of security for Workday's public cloud environment used for development, testing, validation, build and operation of our products. You will be working closely with the product and infrastructure teams at Workday in the areas of security tools development, platform/infrastructure design, and secure application design.

You'll be encouraged to keep your skills up to date by attending training courses, security conferences, and other events such as internal red/blue team exercises and hackathons.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enhances security team accomplishments and competence by planning delivery of solutions; answering technical and procedural questions for less experienced team members; teaching improved processes; mentoring team members.

  • Determines security requirements by evaluating production infrastructure design and requirements; researching and developing information security policy, standards and guidelines; conducting system security assessments.

  • Updates job knowledge by tracking and understanding emerging security practices and standards; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations;

  • Enhances department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments;

  • Deploy and improve tools for conducting periodic security checks of critical workday infrastructure, services, and applications; tools in our inventory include those we build, buy as well as those derived from open source projects.

  • Contribute to the development of and participate in risk and threat modeling programs used by the security team for architecture reviews for Workday's applications and infrastructure;

  • Strong focus on maturing Workday's security models, patterns and templates;

  • Help plan the future of the security program by assisting in the adoption and alignment with industry best practise security standards (CIS, NIST etc.);

Skills and Experience:

  • 2+ years of progressively responsible experience in the area of security tools development or technical security architecture and design. Most recent roles should reflect direct, hands-on experience with technical security areas.

  • You are a security specialist with experience across multiple disciplines including cloud security concepts, network security, application security, and systems security;

  • Working knowledge of cloud security concepts and professional hands-on experience documenting and implementing security controls of the same;

  • Operational experience supporting production systems (including on-call support);

  • Proficient in at least one scripting language with the ability to apply automation to ensure desired and consistent security configurations are maintained;

  • A functional understanding of network, application and platform security tools and concepts;

  • Understanding of application, system, and security threats, attack techniques and mitigating controls;

  • Working knowledge of securing public and private cloud infrastructure (Openstack, Vmware, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure and GCP experience a plus);

  • Experience with securing systems using the Linux OS;

  • Organized, responsive, and highly thorough problem solver;

  • Able to gain support and consensus with multiple stakeholders;

This position is NOT REMOTE, either Beaverton, OR or Mclean, VA.
